Casse-croute

Staying with the Bermondsey Street theme, but at the other end of the style spectrum, is Casse-Croute, which is more French than anywhere we’ve actually been to in France, has a blackboard instead of menus and specialises in what we imagine really good home cooking tastes like. It’s like being cuddled under a blanket by a log fire… it’s tiny, cosy, the service is like your friend bringing your lunch… and at TXG we can’t help but love somewhere where the waitress, when asking if we were having cheese as well as pudding, looked us straight in the eye, gave a stereotypical gallic shrug, and uttered the fabulous line ‘why not have both, you have time, no?’. Ah, if only everywhere in London could have that attitude, rather than hovering after 1 hour and 45 minutes and bringing the unrequested bill, even though we have finished, and even though there’s no-one waiting for our table. Vive Casse-Croute!
